Mommy & Baby Yoga

yoga4

As a new mom, my days usually consist of staying at home with my babe, because let’s face it, that is where we are most comfortable. Venturing out of the house with a newborn is a job in itself, and sometimes it is a whole lot easier just to stay at home! That being said, for the past month or so I have been taking part of the Mommy and Baby Yoga class put on by Vanessa from Third Eye Nutrition & Wellness. It’s a morning class once a week where moms can go (with the babies) and practice yoga! Not only is it great for getting us out of the house, but as someone who has had no experience with yoga prior to this, it has allowed me to learn something new! Keep reading to find out more about my experience, and if you are interested in joining us the classes are on Tuesdays at 10 AM at River City Fitness Club. Hope to see you there!

I have to say, my favorite part about attending the classes is meeting the moms! It is so nice to chat with other women who are going through the same things that you are. I was a little nervous the first day that I went because I didn’t know what to expect, and like I mentioned, I had never tried yoga ever before. But it was great, I actually made a new friend that very first class who’s daughter is the same age as Zuri. And even though I didn’t really know what I was doing, I still left that day feeling excited that I met someone new. So if you are thinking about attending the class but feel like you won’t know anyone – come anyway! Everyone is so friendly, and the best part about meeting new moms is that you instantly have a million things in common to talk about!

Now, lets talk about how this first time yoga girl actually made out. I won’t lie to you, trying yoga for the first time was very intimidating, I really had no idea what to expect! That being said, once I got the hang of things, I really enjoyed it! I remember feeling excited after the first class because I was able to do most of the poses no problem. I was pretty sore the next day, but that’s probably because I haven’t used or stretched many parts of my body since having a baby! But after the second and third time going I realized how good yoga actually is for a new mom. We are constantly curled over, either holding the baby or carrying all of the heavy baby gear, so taking some time out of the week to stretch out those muscles really makes a difference! It got easier with every class that I went to, and Vanessa makes an effort to work on those places that most moms are struggling with!

Another concern that I had going into this was what if Zuri started freaking out during the class? One of the main reasons people practice yoga is to have that time of relaxation, but there is nothing relaxing about having a screaming baby in your ear. Well I soon realized that the babies are unpredictable, and being in a class full of them, they all have their moments and that is totally fine! It takes the pressure off because no baby is perfect and can last through an hour class without saying boo! The class is very easy going that way. If you have to nurse, you can. If you have to change a diaper, you can. You can tend to your baby any way that you have to at any time. Vanessa is so great with all of the babies, and sometimes she will walk with them during the class so you can continue with the poses. Zuri actually fell asleep a few times in her arms, it was great!

Thanks again to Vanessa for being an awesome instructor and for teaching me something new that I hope to practice for many years to come!
